Florida, Camagüey
Conducted by
Pastor Paul Baptiste
with the support of
Pastor Eric Williams (translator)
and
Juan Carlos Lache, the local church pastor.
Florida, in the province of Camagüey, is a small agricultural community. The church (below, left) is located on a dirt road in a very poor area of town. The only car at the site was the one in which we arrived. The meeting was nearing its close when we came and we immediately began taking pictures. As soon as we walked we sensed audience-tensions (below, right) rise. It was evident something was wrong. When the church elder came to us and began asking questions we discovered the reason for the tension was that they thought we were another set of government representatives. It turns out others had been coming whom they knew were there to report the church activities to the authorities. Once introductions were made, the stress level eased and the program continued.
The Team of Pastors Phillip Baptiste (► left) and his translator, Pastor Eric Williams (►right), appeared to work almost as one person in delivering their rousing message to the 400+ in attendance.
The real story in this church is what happened when Phillip and the Pastor made the call. In the middle of this poor, poverty stricken community, it seemed the whole church rose at once. More than 100 people moved forward to the alter and spilled off from the platform to the main floor. It was a wonderful sight to behold! |
