Safety and Security:
I have checked with the U S State Department to see if they
raise any additional caution in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist
attacks on the United States and none has been issued. I will continue to
monitor this and place any warnings here. The State Department has urged that precautions be taken along the 1000-mile border between Venezuela and Columbia due to the Columbian guerrillas who operate in that region. But none of us are scheduled to go into that region. Common sense will dictate that visitors should avoid any type of demonstrations, which tend to occur at or near university campuses. The purpose and location of such demonstrations are often announced in advance. Most major tourist destinations, including coastal beach resorts and Margarita Island, are not generally affected by protest actions. Most crime in Venezuela is economically motivated. Pickpockets concentrate in and around crowded bus and subway stations, especially the area around "Parque Simon Bolivar," near the "Capitolio" area in downtown Caracas. Travelers must exercise caution in displaying money and valuables. There have been incidents of unlicensed cabs ("piratas") overcharging, robbing and injuring passengers. Travelers should take care to use radio-dispatched taxis or check to make sure that the license plate reads "libre," which indicates the cab is licensed. Travelers arriving late at night at the domestic terminal of the international airport should be aware that "pirata" cabs are known to prey on tourists arriving on delayed flights after licensed cabs have left for the evening. Travelers should call a 24-hour radio-dispatched taxi service from a public phone in the airport lobby or ask the airline representatives to contact a licensed cab company. Drivers of licensed cabs permitted to carry passengers at the airport will have laminated identity cards, in addition to license plates reading "libre." A number of U.S. citizens have reported that Venezuelan officials at airports, immigration offices and police stations have demanded bribes. U.S. citizens should report immediately to the U.S. Embassy any such demand and attempt to provide the Embassy with the name and badge numbers of the individuals. |

Dates: 1) Campaign dates:The Campaigns will begin on
Friday evening, October 12, 2001 and conclude on Saturday night, October 27.
That means there are 16 evening meetings plus three more on Sabbath
mornings, making a total of 19. The last Sabbath may be "non-standard" if a
mass-baptism is planned. 2) Travel dates: Given that flight schedules are
somewhat unpredictable it is important for each evangelist to be on site
well in advance of the meetings. Guest evangelists should arrive in Caracas
no later than Tuesday, October 9. Reservations have been made for us for two nights at the Hotel Puerto Viejo when we arrive in Caracas on October 9. While I anticipate someone will meet our flights to ensure that we get to the hotel, just in case, the address of the hotel is: 3 y 4ª transversal, Urbanización Puerto Viejo - Vía Playa Grande, Catia La Mar and its telephone numbers are: 0212 3521311 and 0212 3524044. We will stay there Tuesday and Wednesday nights. The cost will be about US$70 per night. The Union leadership will be with us on Wednesday for a day of orientation. Your continuing flights to the Campaign sites should be on Thursday morning, October 11. This will give you sufficient time for familiarization with the city, Campaign location, translator, local pastor, hotel, etc. Departure after closing on Saturday night, October 27, is at your discretion. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Coordinators: The union and conferences have assigned pastors
in each city to serve as campaign coordinators for that area. They are more than
willing to respond to specific questions that guest evangelists may have. Below are
the names, e-mail addresses, and phone numbers of these coordinators listed by the cities
for which they are responsible. Unless the guest evangelist speaks Spanish contact
with the coordinator by telephone should be for emergencies only. Most have a better
ability to read (and possibly write) English than they do to speak it. Here is a list of
the coordinators:
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hotels
**Puerto Ordáz and San Félix are across the river from each other so guest evangelists in both cities will stay at the Hotel Embajador, in Pto. Ordáz. **The Hawaii Conference has requested that each of their guest evangelists to stay with local pastors or members. Prices quoted above are in U.S. dollars and to that must be added tax and the cost of other services (phone, room-service, laundry, etc.). Each guest evangelist is responsible for his/her own hotel bill. |

Sermon Titles, Order, Decision Cards & Appeal Songs: Click on this heading for sermon information used in advertising.
Insurance (New): The Inter-American Division has applied for limited insurance coverage for Campaign participants who information is complete on the Campaign website (age, mailing address, flight arrival information). Those for whom I don't have complete information will NOT have insurance coverage. Coverage will begin for the first group on October 9 and last for 21 days, sufficient to cover travel to Venezuela, the duration of the Campaign, and the return trip home. Coverage for the group from Pennsylvania will begin on November 20 and last for 21 days. To download a copy of the application blank (only to be completed by the Inter-American Division) and description of the coverage (in Adobe Acrobat - pdf - format) just click here on: insurance application and coverage.
Decision Cards (NEW): (cards 1-4) (cards 5-8) Local Campaign leaders should download the Spanish Decision Cards. They are in Word Perfect format. They should without editing, print them out in sufficient quantity for distribution to every individual attending the meetings. Guest Evangelists can also download cards by clicking on the bold sections just after the heading for this section, and print these out for the purpose of familiarization.
Appeal Songs: Regardless of whether or not it is used, the text for most sermons includes an appeal song. Music with English and Spanish words songs in Acrobat (.pdf) format may be downloaded here. Highlight the language of your choice. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Translator: There is a scarcity of experienced Adventist translators from English to Spanish in Venezuela. It is IMPORTANT for each speaker to try to find someone to come and assist with the translating. If finding one is difficult to impossible, church leaders tell us they may be able to find a non-Adventist translator who can provide this service. This has been successful in the past and many times the translators have been baptized. But, it does increase the cost of the Campaign, and this is an expense that is not contemplated in the Campaign budget. If the guest evangelist is coming under the auspices of The Quiet Hour and is bringing $1,500 to assist with Campaign expenses, this is one of the expenses that may need to be underwritten with these funds.
Telephone: You can make a call from Venezuela back to the US and charge it to your ATT Calling Card if you dial: 0800-225-5288. You will be prompted to enter the phone number you wish to call followed by your Calling Card number.
Electricity: The country uses 110 volt, 60 cycle electricity (just like the US) and the electrical outlets accept American-style plugs.
Compuserve access: Compuserve does have many local access numbers in cities throughout Venezuela. Prior to leaving for Venezuela, those who have a Compuserve account, may log onto Compuserve and GO "Phones" and print out a list of the local access numbers in Venezuela.
Climate: Since Venezuela is only a few hundred miles north of the equator temperature varies by elevation and not so much by the time of year. So in the cities along the coast it is warm, ranging from 80 to the mid 90 degrees farenheit during the day and cooling down in the evenings into the mid to upper 70s. Since the elevation of Caracas is significantly higher the temperature is 7 to 10 degrees cooler.
Health: Water: It is important for every guest to assume that tap water is not potable. However, bottled drinking water is available. Guests may want to purchase a hand-held water-purification system at your local camping store to use to purify the tap water. Medication: Gastro-intestinal disorder (Montezuma's revenge) is the traveler's scourge when visiting a part of the world in which you must consume anything that is unfamiliar to your digestive track! Problems are inevitable, even to the most cautious. So the word is, be careful, listen to your body, and then respond quickly. I'm no doctor and will not give you medical advice, but I will tell you what I do (and these steps have worked during some of the most "trying" situations). (1) I am careful what I eat and drink, but I don't worry about it. (2) I listen to my body. If know from experience it is easier to stop the problem before it becomes serious than waiting to address it after it's too late. Meanwhile, I'm miserable and my work can be undermined. So, as soon as I realize trouble is "on the way" I will take one or more of the following medications: a) Imodium (treats the symptoms, but provides welcome relief), and/or b) one of two antibiotics prescribed by my physician: Either Cipro (one 250 mg. pill in the morning and the other in the evening), or Avelox (one 400 mg pill per day). Either of these has an immediate and positive effect on me and helps eliminate the problem before it become serious. If I didn't "catch it" in time, then I may take Imodium to provide short-term relief, as well as take the antibiotics. Obviously, you must consult your physician before you leave on your trip and secure such medication as he/she recommends, since you are unlikely to find the same medication sold under the same name in another country. Malarial prophylactics: Malaria is endemic to much of the South American Continent. I do urge you consult your physician and/or your area public-health department about taking medication to help prevent this disease. For many years Larium (or Lariam) was the medication recommended by the General Conference Health Department for their traveling staff. Recently a new mediation has been placed on the market which was recommended to me by County Health Department. It is called "Malarone." Since I'm away from home I don't have the documents with me to confirm the spelling but I will correct this paragraph when I get home. However, this should be sufficient for your to mention to your physician or health department and to get their recommendation. What is important is that you take the medication prior to, during, and upon your return home, in harmony with the recommended dosage pattern. Also, while you're in country be sure you go out you spray yourself with mosquito repellant -- both for Malaria or for Dengue Fever, which is also transmitted by mosquitoes. Inoculations: While the government of Venezuela does not require vaccinations, on general principles I recommend that travelers secure some of the readily-available vaccinations such as: Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A, and Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Meningitis, and Tetanus. Hyperlink: It is very important that guest evangelists read very carefully the section on "personal health" found on the "General Information" page. Be sure to go to the organization linked here (www.tripprep.com) and read the information on that page regarding inoculations and prophylactic medication for Malaria, which is endemic in many parts of Venezuela. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Meals: The Union has arranged for meals to be provided for
guest evangelists. I asked them to provide me a cost per meal instead I was provided a
cost per day for all three meals. While the amount varies by region, I´m sure guest
evangelists can arrange less than three meals at a lower price. Furthermore, I'll ask
leaders to review these prices again. The information I was provided is as follows:
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Airline tickets: Each participant is free to secure his/her own tickets wherever he/she pleases. I do encourage each one to secure a competitive bid from Mrs. Julia Reid, at Mission Travel. She has long experience with the General Conference with international travel arrangements and access to discounted tickets through contractual relationships with the airlines. Her phone number is 240-568-6300. Her fax number is 301-725-6492. You can also reach her by e-mail at: MissionTvl AT Juno.Com
Flight destinations: I received
word from Venezuela regarding flight destinations. When you buy your airline
tickets, you'll want to buy them from your point of departure to Caracas, so you arriving
on the dates suggested above. If you're Campaign is not in Caracas, then you'll want
to buy a ticket from Caracas (on Thursday, after the orientation meeting on Wednesday) on
to the airport that is closest to your Campaign site. These are as follows: If your Campaign is in the West Mission, you should fly to either Maracaibo or San Cristóbal. If your Campaign is in the Central-West Conference you should fly to Barquisimeto. If your Campaign is in the Eastern Mission, you should fly to Puerto Ordáz or Maturín. And if it´s in the Southeast Mission, you will fly through Puerto Ordáz and continue your flight to Santa Elena de Uairén. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Travel Documents: Each guest evangelist MUST have a valid passport prior to leaving the US.
When you arrive in Venezuela you will go through both immigration and customs. Be sure to tell immigration that you will be in the country until October28th (or whatever your departure date is) so you will be authorized to stay in the country until that date. It's better to give yourself a few extra days to cover any eventuality. I've received a tip that all those going to Venezuela should BE SURE that your passports are stamped with the date of entry when going through immigration. Immigration authorities will be looking for that stamp when exiting the country and not having it is likely to cause may create unnecessary and frustrating delays, questionings, etc.
Customs: Please note, it will be FAR better if your laptop and video projector arrives in something looking like a suitcase or a briefcase and NOT in a box. If a customs inspector happens to review your bags it could be that you will be delayed and they could ask you to pay duty, a situation that is less likely to develop if you've packed the equipment as I mentioned. If a customs inspector should happen to open your bags and find the equipment explain that you've been invited to present some lectures and you need this equipment for that purpose. If their concern continues it is because they are afraid you will sell the equipment to someone in the country and leave it without someone paying duty. In that situation invite them to note in your passport that you are bringing the equipment in the country so, on your way out, you can show it to Customs so they will see that the equipment is indeed leaving the country. In the worst case, you may need to leave it with Customs and then we'll have to ask church leadership to go through the formalities to retrieve it--hopefully in time for the opening meeting. As you can see, all these problems are likely to be avoided if you pack this equipment in something that doesn't attract the attention of the inspectors. The equipment secured from the Carolina Conference will be in a "roll-on" case which can be carried on or checked.
Jesus Videos: to bring with you the Spanish-Language version of the Jesus Video which I sent you some time ago. I won't have any extras with me.
Finances: Guest evangelists from Hawaii, whose tickets are paid for by The Quiet Hour, will bring US$900 to assist with campaign expenses.
Local Transportation: The Venezuela Union will be responsible, at their expense, to assign someone to pick you up, take you to the Campaign location and bring you back to the hotel each night. |
