About Kenya |
Click for information about Kenya from Compton's Encyclopedia. Click for information about the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Kenya. Crusade plans: The East African Union is laying plans for a national campaign that will take place during 2002. Their objectives include: providing 500,000 sets of Bible studies to their members and training them in their use; conducting evangelistic crusades in all 5,500 organized churches and companies during the course of the year; providing sermon notes and training for as many local church elders and other members as may be necessary to reach these objectives; cooperating with The Carolina Conference Global Evangelism Program and The Quiet Hour to invite guest evangelists (pastors, laymen, and theology students) to hold evangelistic campaigns between May 31 and June 15, 2002 in selected locations, utilizing sermon notes and illustrative graphics materials. They have set an objective of baptizing over 100,000 souls during the course of 2002. Those interested in preaching one of these crusades should contact R S Folkenberg at: Send e-mail... For sponsorship by The Quiet Hour, please call Charlene West at (800) 900-9021. The date for the crusades to be conducted by guest evangelists has been selected so students from Southern Adventist University and Oakwood College may participate in this program very soon after graduation. |
Website Orientation |
---|
VITAL! Due to the size and complexity of the this nationwide campaign (5,500 evangelistic series with 89 conducted by guest evangelists) this website is the PRIMARY means of providing information both to the guest evangelists and to the East African Union. Each participant IS RESPONSIBLE to check this site at least once a week. Each time you open the website take note of the date it was last updated. As the campaign approaches, be sure to check it more frequently since, near the end, it will be updated 2-3 times a day! Also, please NOTE, the specific crusade site assignments provided below only tentative and must not be considered final until December 31, 2001. |
TABLE ORIENTATION:
The tables below are divided into three
sections separated by a full-screen width dividing line. The first two
sections provide information respectively regarding the guest evangelists
and the campaign location. Campaign numbers and locations are the
same in both sections. However the first section provides information
about the guest evangelist: a) full name, b) age, c) mailing address, d)
e-mail address, and e) telephone number(s). The first portion of the third
table provides information about guest evangelists who have not been
assigned to a specific campaign location. These names are removed as they
are assigned to his/her location. The second portion of the third table
provides information about support team members for each crusade location.
Preceding the name of each support-team-member are two numbers separated
by a hyphen (-). The first number is the campaign number, and the
second is the number of the individual who will be supporting in that
campaign. The lowest number after the hyphen will be a "2" since the
speaker is assumed to be #1. The final table provides "Miscellaneous Information" with vital crusade information. In the first column, immediately after the name of the crusade site, is a letter indicating the language requested for the video on the life of Christ. E=English, S=Swahili, and B=Both. Both will be sent to the guest evangelist and the language selection done locally. |
COLOR CODES: 1) Grey background = Each individual responsible for his/her personal expenses but are not required to bring supplemental crusade funds. 2) White background = Airline ticket provided for Guest Evangelist by The Quiet Hour, but he/she must a) provide $2,500 in supplemental funding for his/her respective campaign, and b) cover all the rest of his/her personal expenses. 3) Turquoise background = College/University faculty and students with partial sponsorship provided by The Quiet Hour but who will NOT provide supplemental campaign funding. 4) Fuscia background = Personal information is missing. Note: the age of the individual must be entered in the parenthesis after his/her name in order to have insurance coverage. Cells have been highlighted in fuscia which do not have this age information. 5) Yellow background = No guest evangelist has been found for the location. |
"CCG" COLUMN: In the first table below, an "X" in the column headed "CCG" (Carolina Conference Graphics) means one of the 30 sets of graphics equipment has been reserved for the guest evangelist. |

Miscellaneous Information: |
||||||||||||||
Dates: 1) Crusade dates and schedule: The crusades will begin on Friday evening, May 31, 2002 and conclude on Saturday night, June 15, 2002. That means there are 16 evening meetings plus three more on Sabbath mornings, making a total of 19 meetings/sermons. However, guest evangelists may not need to preach the last Sabbath since a mass-baptism is likely. 2) Travel dates: Given that flight schedules are somewhat unpredictable it is important for each evangelist to be on site well in advance of the meetings. Those from the US should plan to begin their trip by flying to Europe Monday, May 27, arriving in Europe on the 28th. They will join our fellow guest evangelists from Europe and fly to Nairobi on Tuesday, May 28 arriving in Nairobi that same evening. Wednesday, May 29, will be the day of orientation for all the guest evangelists and their teams. It will be the only opportunity for all the group to be together before going to our respective crusade sites. The East African Union leaders will be there to provide counsel as well. You will spend Tuesday and Wednesday nights in Nairobi and then go to your crusade sites on Thursday the 30th. This will allow time on Thursday afternoon and Friday for familiarization with the city, crusade location, translator, local pastor, hotel, etc. Please plan to return to Nairobi as soon as possible on Sunday morning (June 16) so we can spend the afternoon together before continuing our individual trips on Sunday night or Monday, the 17th. Some will be going home and some will take advantage of their trip and visit some of the game parks in East Africa. 3) Travel destinations: For some teams Nairobi will be their final flight destination. The following is a list a campaign numbers along with the city to which they should continue their flight on Thursday, May 30. The average flight time from Nairobi to each of the following cities for campaigns #53 to #86 is about 1 hour.

Hotels: Click on this line for further hotel information. | ||||||||||||||
Airline tickets: Each participant is free to secure his/her own tickets wherever he/she pleases. I do encourage each one to secure a competitive bid from Mrs. Julia Reid, at Mission Travel. She has long experience with the General Conference with international travel arrangements and access to discounted tickets through contractual relationships with the airlines. Her phone number is (240) 568-6300, her fax number is 301-725-6492 and her e-mail address is: missiontvl AT juno.com. |
||||||||||||||
Insurance: The East-Africa Union will apply for limited insurance coverage for crusade participants whose information is complete on the crusade website (age, mailing and e-mail addresses, phone numbers, and flight arrival information). Those for whom I don't have complete information will NOT have insurance coverage. Coverage will begin on May 27 and last for 30 days, sufficient to cover travel to Kenya, the duration of the campaign, and the return trip home. To download a copy of the application blank (only to be completed by the East-Africa Union) and description of the coverage (in Adobe Acrobat - pdf - format) just click here on: insurance application and coverage. |
||||||||||||||
Sermon notes, graphics and topics: Early in 2002 I will mail to every guest evangelist a set of sermon notes and coordinated PowerPoint graphics. On receiving these CDs you will want to print out the sermon notes. Though it may seem to be a problem, I URGE you to print the sermons a) on a color printer (you'll find the notes MUCH easier to use if you can see the pictures that are embedded in color), and b) using only ONE SIDE of each piece of paper. It is far less distracting to the audience for you NOT to have to turn pages but rather slip them from one pile to another on the pulpit. The sermon notes are provided in Adobe Acrobat format and each file has a ".pdf" extension. If you don't have an Acrobat reader installed, I've provided one for you to install very easily. On the root directory of Volume #1, you'll find a file named: rs405eng.exe Just find that file using Microsoft Explorer and double click on it and the reader will be installed. Then you can use Microsoft explorer, highlight the sermon you want to open on the CD, and it will open and is ready to print. Recognizing that it is not possible to cover all the vital elements of Present Truth in only 19 messages the primary component in leading individuals to make their decision for Christ must be the personal Bible studies given by the members prior to the beginning of this campaign. It is in the light of this fact that the following messages have been suggested as topics of primary importance to review. The proposed (corrected on March 25, 2002) schedule of topics may be downloaded by clicking on: Topic List. |
||||||||||||||
Appeal Songs: Regardless of whether or not it is used, the text for most sermons includes an appeal song. Music with English words songs in Acrobat (.pdf) format may be downloaded here. Click on the language to download: English |
||||||||||||||
Decision Cards: I encourage all the guest evangelists to download (in Adobe Acrobat format) the Decision Cards that the East African Union is downloading, printing and distributing to all the campaign sites. You can do this simply by clicking the first two words of this section. | ||||||||||||||
Mass Baptism Sites: The East African Union has selected the following cities as sites for mass baptisms on Sabbath, June 15. Nairobi (may have more than 1 site), Eldoret, Hombay, Kericho, Kerugoya, Kisii, Kisumu, Kitale, Meru, Mombasa, Naivasha, Nakuru, Nyamira, Nyeri, Oyugis, and Webuye. | ||||||||||||||
Telephone: It is easy to direct dial calls to the United States from Kenya. After getting an outside line you dial 000-1-area code-number. I don't know what the policy is at the Conference Center regarding charging calls to their number. I would recommend that each guest evangelist secures a Calling Card. ATT's "USA-Direct" program isn't available in Kenya. However, both Sprint and MCI do have similar service and I'd suggest securing one to use during the crusade. |
||||||||||||||
Electricity: The country uses 220-240 v electricity and the standard, large, British style electrical outlets. Each traveler will want to secure several to use during their visit to Kenya. Most video projectors and laptop computers will operate on either 110v or 220v. Check to be sure any other appliances (hair dryers, irons etc.) you may bring will operate on this higher voltage. If they wont, you'll want to bring a transformer. Remember "converters" are less reliable and may damage some equipment. One other suggestion in the realm of electrical current. The British building codes prohibit full-power electrical outlets in bathrooms. Some of these codes are still in force in former colonies. If you want to use a hair-dryer in the bathroom you'll need to bring an extension cord and run it into the bathroom from another room. In any case, the multiple outlet feature of most extension cords are very handy to have on a trip. |
||||||||||||||
Internet access: There are several numbers by which to access CompuServe in Nairobi. They are: 240333 (this is the best hassle free), others are 218248, 243270, 243213, 243214, 243215. In all cases you will need to select the "SCITOR" network. |
||||||||||||||
Climate: I don't work for the Kenya Chamber of Commerce, but I can assure you that Nairobi's climate is some of the best in the world. The equator traverses Kenya a short distance from Nairobi, hence one might expect warm temperatures. But Kenya's altitude is something above 7,000' and is therefore cool and lovely. We can expect temperatures to range between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, cooling down in the evenings into the lower 70s or upper 60s. We will be here as the rainy season comes to an end. I am assured that by these dates most rains will ended...but that means you should come prepared to handle some wetness. |

Meals: As mentioned in the section dealing with hotels, meals will be provided in the Conference Center for all those who are involved in the Nairobi area and the cost of all three meals is included in the US$25 per day charge. For a detailed explanation of the meal charges at the Conference Center, please go to the hotel information page. I am asking the Union to secure a similar arrangement in each of the other sites so each person will not have to worry about preparing meals. When I have the information it will be provided here. |

Visa application: Each guest evangelist MUST have his/her on valid passport to go to Kenya. You will need to apply for a Business Visa for Kenya no later than the end of February. To apply for the visa click on the "Visa Application" line at the beginning of this section and it will take you to the form in Adobe Acrobat format*. Complete that form and send it with two pictures and your passport to: Ms. Diana Jo Beeler, General Conference of S.D.A., 12501 Old Columbia Pike, Silver Spring, MD 20904. You will need to enclose a check to cover the cost of the visa plus the processing cost. The cost of the visa is $50 for a single-entry visa and $100 for a multiple-entry visa. To this you must add $15 which is to cover the cost of the courier going to the embassy and leaving your documents and returning later to pick up the passport and returning it to you. If you will be traveling only to and from Kenya, a single-entry visa will suffice. But if your post-crusade safaris will take you into neighboring countries and you plan to return to Kenya to depart from there to your home, you will need to secure a multiple-entry visa at this time. Her phone number is: (301) 680-6258 and here e-mail address is: beelerd AT gc.adventist.org Please do NOT DELAY IN APPLYING FOR YOUR VISA. ALLOW AT LEAST MONTH OR MORE TO GET IT DONE. *If you don't have Adobe Acrobat format, when you click on "Visa Application" it will take you to a website that will end with ....visa.pdf If you just erase "pdf" and replace it with "htm" you will be taken to a site where you can download an Adobe Acrobat Reader. Then you can replace the "htm" with "pdf" and you will be able to download and print out the application blank. If you erase the last words "visa.pdf" in the website address, all the way back to where it says.../ke/ and hit "enter," you'll be taken to a web site that will give you information on weather, currency exchange, and a great deal of information about Kenya. Item 7 of the application asks for you to provide the "names and addresses of friends, firms or relatives to be visited." You may fill this in with: East Africa Union of Seventh-day Adventists, Milimani Road, Nairobi, Kenya. |

Immigration: When you arrive in Kenya you will go through immigration. When they ask you how long you will be in the country, be sure to ask them for at least 30 days - just in case you want to visit some of the game parks and to allow yourself time for any eventuality. It's far easier to ask for sufficient time when you enter than to have a problem and need to secure an extension. |

Customs: Church leaders will have met with customs officials before you arrive and will have told them that you will be bringing audio-visual equipment with you so you should have no trouble when you enter the country. However, it is the course of wisdom to pack your equipment in a suitable case, and not a box. If a customs inspector should happen to open your bags and find the equipment, tell them you are going to present some lectures and need this equipment for that purpose. Though unlikely, It is possible they may ask you to complete some forms providing information regarding the equipment you're bringing in the country. You may be asked to submit this form on your departure. |

Videos on the Life of Christ: I have received and will be mailing (in April '02) each speaker a two-hour video on the life of Christ in the European PAL format and in English or Kiswahili. PLEASE, don't forget to bring it with you. Believe me, you'll want to use it. Each crusade site is responsible to secure a VCR on loan to show the video each night, through the projector you will bring. |

Local Transportation: Church leaders will assign someone to pick you up, take you to the crusade site and bring you back to the hotel each night. You will not need to pay for this service. |

Exchanging Money: The currency used in Kenya is the "Kenya Shillings." As of Feb. 27, 2002, the exchange rate between Kenya Shillings and the U. S. dollar was 78.1 Kenya Shillings (Kshs) per dollar. You can check on daily exchange rates between any currencies on the Internet at: http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi This, however, is only a guideline. Depending on where you exchange the money (banks are better than hotels) and the form in which you bring your money, the exchange rate will vary. In the case of Kenya, Travelers Checks receive the lowest (least beneficial to you) exchange rate while large bills get you the best exchange rate. |

Security: It is important that the guest evangelist use more caution than that to which he/she may be accustomed. Use common sense. Its better to be cautious than to wish you had been. For example, don't carry about sums of money which you are not willing to lose, and don't walk the streets alone, without accompaniment, especially after dark. Check with the local pastor and the hotel management to determine where is the most secure place to leave your evangelistic equipment. |

Health: It is very important that guest evangelists read very carefully the section on "personal health" found on the "General Information" page. Be sure to go to the organization linked here (www.tripprep.com) and on that page regarding inoculations and prophylactic medication for Malaria, which is endemic to Kenya, and which we urge each visitor to secure and to take. |

Post-crusade Safaris: East Africa is extremely picturesque and has extraordinary sites to visit. Some guest evangelists will undoubtedly want to remain for a few days after the crusade is over to visit some of these sites. To facilitate this I have contacted a travel agent in Nairobi and asked for some information about possible destinations. If you are interested on visiting some of these sites, please click on the title phrase above ("Post-crusade Safaris") and you will go to a home page where I have compiled some of information they have provided. It will be up to those who are interested to contact them by e-mail or phone to get further information. |
